Lenny Kravitz
has always been a really cool dude who knows how to make good music. His previous album Circus
was lacking compared to his first two, but my faith in him was reborn when I heard 5.
The entire disc is laced with funk that just makes you want to dance. Feel silly dancing
around in your living room playing air guitar? Well dont because music is supposed
to be fun, and if you dont let yourself have fun, then life will suck and Ill
pay for the bullet. ;-) Returning to the music though, Kravitz is one of the few
mainstream musicians that has managed to stay fresh instead of getting stuck in a pop
culture rut. So many of the big buck musicians nowadays have given in to their teen-bop
fans and produced mainstream crap. Its good to see Kravitz still busting out his
best. Dont let the catchy single "Fly Away" fool you, the rest of the
album is quite different. The tune rocks, but it doesnt reflect the coolness the
rest of the disc exhibits. Its refreshing to hear something new every once in a
while. If youre like me and are bored sick of most of the mediocre junk you hear on
the radio nowadays, try this out. The recording isnt perfect. There is some odd
mixing of voices and distortion pedals galore, but its the music that
matters, and that side of the album is rock solid. I mean that, theres not a dud on
the disc. All thirteen songs have their own value and character. Theres more than
one flavor on the disc and chances are that you wont like every song on it, but take
a chance and try something new.
