Best Music Of 2002 Awards by Bill Gaw
My pick has to be the Mahler Symphony No. 6 recorded by the San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas, reviewed in my AA Chapter 39 article. It is the first of an entire Mahler cycle that they will be recording in 5.1 SACD and produced by Delos. Recorded on Sept. 13, 2001, two days after the New Day of Infamy, the orchestra pours its heart out in the most emotional performance of the Sixth that I've heard. The sound is superb, giving the closest feeling to an in the hall feeling that I have ever heard from my system. It is also the first Delos that I've heard that has turned me on. If the rest are even close to the quality of this recording, this will be the cycle to buy. |
